...I spoke with Apple Support and this error is intentional, thus there is no workaround, or at least not one that isn't a hack.
So, all the video content I've purchased over the years is no longer playable on the display I have connected to my MacBook Pro. And the cable was run through the walls when the house built, so there's no changing the cable even if that were a solution.
According to Apple Support, this is meant to prevent people from pirating content. I am presuming Apple has no issue with us watching on a connected monitor, yet a totally legit in-home use is now no longer permissible. Sadly, my days of purchasing video on iTunes are over. Sadly because it was a great service while it lasted.
