Syncing desired to Ipod when you have ...

I have a 4GB ipod, which will hold roughly 1,000 tracks.

But I have about 1,250 songs on my Itunes, I would like to know how
I chose what songs go onto my Ipod without having to delete tracks as
my Ipod can only hold 1,000.

I tried un clicking tracks that I didnt want going on my ipod, yet keeping them
on my Itunes??? But it didnt seem to work or maybe Im doing it wrong??
