I'm on 10.6.1 and iTunes 9.
ITunes worked well for awhile, then I switched to auto-organization (I don't know if that had something to do with it or if it was just a coincidence, but the problems started after I upgraded to iTunes Media Organization)
When I try to launch iTunes, each time it now says "Checking iTunes Library". This takes an inordinately long time, and afterwards, after the pop-up disappears, the main iTunes window never comes up. Then I have to force quit iTunes, because the process is still running, just "Not Responding".
I have tried restarting, repairing permissions, re-installing iTunes (only running the installer again, over the existing installation), and disabling my other applications that interact with iTunes (Coversutra and Awaken).
On the 25-30 times that I have tried relaunching iTunes, it has actually launched about 3 times (main window coming up, songs able to be played, etc.). Even on the rare time it has been successful, it still begins with a very long "Checking iTunes Library" process first.
Even if that check is successful and I think the problem is behind me, a subsequent try to launch the app STILL has the "Checking..." pop-up and needs to be force quit.
The only other time I can remember seeing "Checking iTunes Library" is when upgrading versions, so I'm not sure what else I can try to try and fix the problem. Any suggestions?

Since installing iTunes 9 the application keeps starting automatically on Start-up. Even if I then close the application, then it starts-up again later, and sometimes even plays a song of its own will.
Any ideas what may be causing this and advice how to stop it?

I want to have my compilation artists appear on my ipod's artist category under one name (such as the album artist) while keeping all the information of the real artist for each song. Is that possible?
For example I have an album that has extra artists for each song, all made by one person, just an additional artist for each song. Thus cluttering up my artist field i my ipod. I hated that so I switched that album to compilation, but now I never see it because I do not go into compilations. What I really want is to have all these songs appear under the same artist, but still retain the information of who collaborated on the particular song.

Since installing itunes 9, i get a spinning beach ball every couple of seconds/minutes. Sometimes it goes away, but I seem to have to force quit every couple of minutes. I have reinstalled the software twice. Not sure how to fix, as the program is basically unusable now.

Folders in Playlist ...
I'm trying to switch to iTunes from Audion (SoundJam MP prior to that) and one thing that's driving me very crazy is not being able to have folders in the playlist. I don't want to see any individual tracks, just a listing of my CDs that plays when I double click on an album. How can I configure iTunes like that?
Or, if it's not possible, has anyone found a better replacement for SoundJam MP than Audion? It's inferior but the best I've been able to find. Pretty sad considering SoundJam MP has been out of publication for 8 years. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SoundJam_MP

I have video podcasts that used to sync painlessly with my iPod Classic 160 GB, but since the iTunes 9 update I get '"Yada yada" was not copied to the iPod "iPod Name Here" because it cannot be played on this iPod.'

Store Will Not Open Within iTunes! ...
I get a message when trying to connect to the store is "iTunes requires Safari 4.0.3 or later to be installed to use the iTunes Store within iTunes. Use Software Updates to download and install the latest version of Safari." When I go to the Software Updates, it says my software is up to date. I have tried downloading the latest version of Safari and it hasn't worked either. When trying to download the new Safari, it says I need Mac 10.5 or later when I have 10.4.11!

I'm running iTunes 9.0.2 (or whatever the most recent version is) on Snow Leopard (10.6.1) and for the last while I've noticed iTunes will occaisionally mute itself. I leave it running pretty much all the time, and sometimes when I return to my machine and start playing music, I've noticed iTunes (and only iTunes) has become muted.

Itunes 9 airdisk = gapless playback ...
I've got a reasonably chunky 114 GB 18,500 song itunes library on a 7200rpm 1TB airdisk connected via usb to my airport extreme. I did this so I could share the one central library between my leopard desktop G5, (which is permanently connected to my home stereo) and my snow leopard MBP laptop (which I generally use on the couch/in bed etc with headphones). Both macs are running iTunes 9.0.1
My problem is this: every time I switch between computers and open the air disk library itunes automatically starts recalculating the gapless playback for the entire library. This makes itunes unusable and takes days (well I assume it would if I let it finish. I did let it finish the very first time and it took approx 1.5 days!) Then if I switch to the other mac, the same thing happens again! So essentially I'm stuck using the airdisk itunes library on only one computer which totally defeats the purpose. This gapless playback issue never arose under itunes 8.
iTunes performance from airdisk is absolutely molasses slow at the best of times. I've persevered because it's the only way I've figured out to be able to use the one central library on both computers without having to have them both turned on all the time (as would be the case if I had the itunes library the g5 and networked it through itunes on the laptop).
I'm about to concede defeat and remove the music library from the airdisk, or downgrade back to itunes 8.
Is anyone doing this kind of thing successfully? What's the secret?

Problem With Itunes ...
When I try to open a folder in my itunes, my colored wheele starts to spin and the system locks up. It keeps spinning and I can't even force quit, it won't quit. The only way to stop it is to take out my battery.

Basic migration help??? ...
I am trying to migrate all of my itunes and iphoto to my new machine. I have used migration asst and seem to have got all docs but cant find any music or photo's. Where will they be?, not in itunes on new machine. It took about 1 hour so was a large amount of data.
A non tech answer would be best. Have i done something wrong? Seemed straightforward?

I keep my iTunes library (and associated files) and music folder together on an external hard drive so that I can access my music both at home (PC) and at work (Mac).
I have approaching 400GB of music, so every time iTunes decides to update my the library - for which I am never given a choice or warning - this becomes an extremely time-consuming task. I have just upgraded to Snow Leopard, which I assume is the reason my iTunes library is now updating again, despite there being no changes made to my configuration or additional music added since the last time I loaded the library (on OS 10.4).
Is there any way to speed up this process or skip it? It seems to be initiated every time there is some iTunes update and always take forever. This current update looks like it will take many many hours - it's at about 5% after an hour. It also seems like the process is taking far longer than it ever did on 10.4 - has anybody else noticed this?
I keep two copies of my .itl file, one that has been updated for my Mac and one for my PC. I generally do the following, if anybody has comments or suggestions to make:
0) All music and iTunes files are stored in a parent music directory on my external
1) Update iTunes library on the Mac
2) Duplicate it and all associated files
3) Open the Mac library on my PC, which initiates an automatic library update and creates a Windows version.
4) Duplicate that too - I now have two separate copies of the library, one for each OS to avoid having to update the library every single time I open it on a different platform.
5) Any new music I want to add I do on my Mac system, so the Mac library remains up to date while the Windows version falls behind until I decide to update it by opening the Mac library in Windows.
Basically, I'm looking for any insight into: 1) just what iTunes is updating, 2) why it takes so long (yes I realise 400GB is a LOT of music), 3) how I can improve the process or avoid it, and 4) better solutions to my current setup, given my desire to have my music in a single location but accessible to both my Mac and PC.

How to view albums in grid in one genre? ...
Is it possible to find a way to view all of your albums in one genre in "grid" view, so that you can see a bunch of albums all within that genre at once? I like the beginning of "grid" view, but once you click on a genre, it changes to a type of list view. The 'rollover' effect when you mouse over one genre is good, but it does not seem to be in a specific order, and then it shows only a few albums (for example about 4 or 5 different out of 148 that exist in that one genre).
Is there a way to see all those albums in that one genre - their cover/artwork - in "grid"? Essentially, I think I'm looking for a view like "icon" view in the Finder, where I'm seeing all the different icons of my albums within one 'folder' of one genre. Can it be done, and if so, how?

My preference is to view my albums by grid view.
However, I'm getting frustrated that when I scroll there is a short wait while it loads up the next lot of album cover art. The bit I don't understand is why it doesn't do this in the background ahead of time in the knowledge that when I'm in grid view I'm very likely to be scrolling and therefore it should load all the album artwork into memory.
Currently, i tend to force the complete scroll before I search, just so it is all loaded up and then I can smoothly scroll while I'm perusing my music.
Is there a way I can force this caching? I have boat loads of memory (3GB) most of which is free at anyone time. I also tend to leave iTunes on all the time so it would be better if iTunes could hold all this in memory.
Any suggestions gratefully received!

i recently went to copy my music library over, thinking all 22gb of music would copy, and it went to copy 44gb of music? are my songs doubled in there? whenever i get new music, i take the file, drag into itunes, then drag the song into the music folder and thats it..am i doubling up? is this normal? bad?

Hello all,
I have been using Alarm Clock 2 with my iMac to wake me up every morning from work for the past couple of years and with the installation of Snow Leopard, I can no longer hit the play button on my remote to snooze the alarm clock without playing a song in iTunes. Has anyone else found a solution for this? Is there a way I can go back to snoozing with my remote without playing a song on iTunes. Have 2 songs blaring is not a good way to start the day.
The app again is Alarm Clock 2 by Robbie Hanson.

Using one iTunes library on my Mac Mini ...
I have a Mac Mini and a Macbook, both running 10.6 and iTunes 9.0.2. I want to just have one version of the library so I don't have to update both when new music is added. The library isn't too big, so I was thinking to store it locally on the Mini and then direct iTunes on the macbook to that library. Can anyone offer any advice on the best way to approach this please?

I have added lyrics to loads of songs fine, but however I get this on a few,
"Lyrics detected but unable to retrieve"
I have checked in iTunes that the lyrics are their, in text with nothing unusual on. I click the lyrics on the iPod Nano (4G) and iPod touch 1G and get the spinny wheel but then get the error "Lyrics detected but unable to retrieve" I can view them on the get info page in iTunes though

Cannot view all tabs in itunes when ...
Hi,
Just after the new itunes upgrade when I plug my iphone into my computer I cannot see all the tabs. It starts with the Summary, Info, Applications, Ringtones, Music, Movies, TV Shows, iTunesU, Ph...(cannot see the rest). I tried going to Windows and Zoom and it doesn't make a difference. I've been trying to sync my Nike ipod and cannot find where the tab is located. My photos tab cannot even be completely viewed. Can someone please help?

itunes 9.0.2 breaks dependent smart ...
I have been using smart playlists to manage a large library of music for a few years now. I have main playlists and sub playlists that reference the main ones. until this last update to 9.0.2 all of my playlists appeared in the sync selected playlists section of my iphone and ipod screens. Now the sub playlists dont show up it seems that since they reference another playlist which is not being synced they are not available for syncing. This makes managing my music impossible even with a 32gb iphone 3gs i cannot sync my entire music library which i would have to do for my sub playlists to work. Here is an example of what im talking about. My main music library is 7245 itesm totaling 36.22GB of space and includes a lot of things that are not music like standup comedy, music videos, those booklets, etc... So i created a smart playlist called "Pure Music" which filtered out everything but the music leaving 6364 items at 29.56GB of space. Now all of my other playlists use the smart playlist command "playlist- is- Pure music" which creates for me sub playlists containing what i want without anything that is not music. Until this update those playlists appeared in my selection window and were syncable without having to sync the parent playlits as well. Now it doesn't work unless i sync the parent playlist which is still larger than the free space on my phone. The only way it seems to work is if i manage my music manually.

Unchecking song affects all playlists ...
I know this has probably been posted a thousand times already but I can't find the answer so please don't yell at me. I have noticed that when I remove the checkmark next to a song in a playlist, it removes the checkmark from all the other playlists that song may be in, essentially removing it from my iTouch all-together when it syncs. For example, I have a playlist called "80's". I then created another playlist called "80's for cd" (to burn). I noticed when I removed the checkmark next to a song in "80's for cd", it removed the checkmark from the 80's playlist also, as well as any other playlist it may be in. This prevented it from transferring to my touch all together. So, my question is, is there a way to remove a checkmark from a particular song in a particular playlist, but keep it selected in other playlists?

External drive problems- iTunes 9 ...
I have a very large library (~27,000 items) on an external drive (USB 2.0).
Since installation of iTunes 9.0 the drive has been ejecting when iTunes starts up.
After iTunes runs (w/spinning beachball) for about 20 seconds, the volume I keep my library on will disappear from the Devices list in the Finder.
Then iTunes will report that it's analyzing for gapless playback.
Then it will stop and all of my tracks will be marked as missing (with the dreaded 'x').
My system log reports the following:

The first messages refer to the disk "Sounds" which is the disk that keeps ejecting, and a spotilight error(?).
The second messages refer to iTunes.
Any ideas about the meaning of these?
I notice others with external drives are having issues, but haven't read an account like mine quite yet.

After iTunes runs (w/spinning beachball) for about 20 seconds, the volume I keep my library on will disappear from the Devices list in the Finder.
Then iTunes will report that it's analyzing for gapless playback.
Then it will stop and all of my tracks will be marked as missing (with the dreaded 'x').
My system log reports the following:

The first messages refer to the disk "Sounds" which is the disk that keeps ejecting, and a spotilight error(?).
The second messages refer to iTunes.
Any ideas about the meaning of these?
I notice others with external drives are having issues, but haven't read an account like mine quite yet.

I wanted to know if it is possible to run iTunes wirelessly if you can't run a cord from the Airport wireless router to the receiver? I ask since my internet connection (cable outlet) is in the basement and my stereo receiver is on another floor so I can't run a cord that far and through the floors. Thanks!

Load Library from iPod ...
My mother's PC just crashed (shocker), and with it went her iTunes library. She has everything on her iPod, though, and I'm wondering if she can load the content to the empty library onto an older Powerbook G4 I gave her. Since she's already synced with one iTunes library, she probably can't do this but if anyone knows a hack or work-around, let me know. It's worth noting that she hasn't enabled disk-usage on her iPod.

I recently suffered a failure of the hard disc on my Mac; the disc was replaced and the machine restored to its factory condition from my original DVD discs.
My iTunes music is kept on an external hard disc and so wasn't affected. I therefore replaced the iTunes library file to my hard disc, from a backup, and all should have been well.
I did have a probem that iTunes failed to find some of my music. but I've now resolved this, with the help of another user on here.
My problem is that my iPod, previously virutally full, is now only about half full - but as far as I can tell, there are no tracks missing!
Could it be that my newly-installed copy of itunes in copying the tracks to the iPod at a much lower sample rate than before, even though it is using the exact same music files.
Anyone know what is going on here?

So I've upgraded my OS, using the new version of iTunes, and I discover that my iPod (5th gen.) has album artwork on it suddenly. In the past, I've set the preference to NOT copy the artwork over even though I do have artwork in iTunes.
I want to keep my artwork in iTunes, but I do not want it on my iPod. The setting that used to control this seems to be gone and I cannot find any evidence that there's another way to remove the artwork from my iPod.

Rio S10 not recognized in iTunes 9.0 ...
iTunes 9.0 and 9.0.1 do not recognize my Rio S10 MP3 player. I didn't have any problems until upgrading iTunes. The player still works in iTunes 8.x.

ITunes 9 will not burn a music CD that ...
Ever since I upgraded to Itunes 9 I cannot copy (burn) a music CD that can be played on any CD player device other than the MacBook. I tried changing the format preference from .aif to .mpg4a but it still only creates CD's that cannot play. I am not pirating anything. I copied my own bought retail music CD's onto the MacBook and gave away the CD's to eliminate clutter. In the past I have been able to copy them for my own use for the car or the bedroom where there is no computer available. This is so frustrating. Please help!

It's great that iTunes allows you to print a CD insert containing a song list for a play list.
I'd like to compose my own liner notes for some of the CDs I burn and include them in the CD insert.
Does anyone know of a a plugin that does this? I realize that I can create such a doc in a word processor, but it would be nice to have the song list automagically taken and formatted from the selected play list and then allow me to add liner notes and print them together.
Ideally, I'd like to be able to permanently associate the insert with the play list, so that whenever I bring up the play list I can print the associated CD insert.
I don't know anything about iTunes plugins or even whether the iTunes architecture is open enough to allow this, but thought it would be worth asking.

I have all of my music on an external HD (WD MyBook) but am having issues playing the songs in iTunes. I receive an error stating "The song ABC could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?". If I choose to locate, I navigate to the MyBook location and it then plays. I also have my iTunes Music folder location set to My Book:iTunes: which is the root location of all the iTunes files. How do I avoid the error, and have the music play from the My Book location all the time?

I had a Time Mchine 'tombstone' yesterday and have had to recover my iTunes library off a backup copy. As I don't have the TC back yet, I have rebuilt the iTunes library on a portable hard drive and its been re-importing the content from the backup onto the drive now for about four hours, and all is going well.
I had to create a new location for the library on the portable drive, and as the files are moved across, their entries are appearing, but the 'missing' entries are still there for the files which should have been on the TC library location. They have a little grey circle next to them with an exclamation mark - the 'original file not found' warning.
How do I get rid of these or is it just a case of manually deleting them ?

I recently moved my entire music library to my new MBP using iTunes Home Sharing. (Simply copying everything over in the Finder didn't work--that's what I tried first.) Home Sharing, of course, does not import playlists from the shared library. I manually recreated my Smart Playlists, which wasn't too hard. I then exported all of my manual playlists to be imported on the new MBP.
The problem is, when I import a playlist, iTunes apparently thinks some tracks are missing, even though I have verified that all my tracks are present, and so copies the missing tracks over through Home Sharing, resulting in duplicate tracks. Since I live in country were even God said goodbye one day and left, leaving the light on, I can still pretty much see what is going on in the world today. I am an Apple fan since 2000, I have first iTunes ever published for PC in my Install folder on HD. I got it, installed it, and I have been using it ever since. From than I have spread the word, and program, to friends and their PC. Few of them were the first time computer users, and when I show them iTunes and Winamp. Since people here use it, on PCs 99% of them does. Boy did they hated Winamp after my short presentation, that's all I'm going to say.
Take in consideration that English is not native language, and by tgat the "victory" was even more meaningful. Just shows how iTunes is built logically, so that even non-computer savvy people can use it.
Today, after 6 years of using it (starting in 2003.) I think its time I get a chance to register my first and only iTunes account.
I know I cant do it, since Serbia is not in the country list, but I am humbly requesting you (administrators, moderators, sales persons, Steve himself) that you enable a possibility for me.

Loud Static with 5.1 surround audio in ...

I'm using a Griffin FireWave firewire audio device with a Logitec analog 5.1 speaker system. I've gotten great surround sound in other applications (QuickTime, WoW, etc...), but when I try to turn on 5.1 audio on a HD TV show in iTunes, I get a very loud, harsh static noise, and nothing else. If I open the file in QuickTime and turn off the stereo audio channel and turn on the 5.1 channel, I get nothing. Silence.
I just recently bought this brand-new 24" iMac (it's awesome, by the way). My old 20" white iMac had the same problem. I'd had other problems with iTunes on that computer (such as not being able to burn CDs from iTunes) so I figured, brand new computer, skip the Migration Assistant, just transfer over files, might fix the problem. No such luck. Of course, it fixed the CD burning problem, still no 5.1 in iTunes.
Contacting Griffin tech support seemed futile, as they no longer make FireWaves, and their software driver hasn't been updated in forever... support page is pretty, "make sure your speakers are plugged in"... and it seems like the company is steering in another direction.
The FireWave itself is very simple. Not many options, not very hard to understand. It does the job, though. 5.1 has been very nice with the FireWave in all other respects. Audio/MIDI Setup works fine with the speaker test. Great sound. Easy to use. HD Apple movie trailers sound fantastic! And I've yet to see ANY other options for connecting 5.1 analog speakers to an iMac.
If anyone else has had this problem, it'd be good to hear it, because searching the forums, I haven't seen any other posts about this. I'd love to know that I'm not alone.
If anyone can help me find a solution, that'd be amazing. I'm a pretty avid user... I had a Mac SE... I used ResEdit! I've been at this a while! This problem has me totally stumped.
Alternatively, if anyone knows of another solution for getting real 5.1 audio using analog speakers on an iMac, please let me know.

Moving iTunes library to a network drive ...
I am in the process of combining all of my family's music from different computers in the house to one music folder on a networked drive. Some of the computers run Windows and some Mac. The way I have done it is just copy the contents of one computer's iTunes folder onto the driv and then just putting in the music from the other computers into the iTunes music sub-folder of the iTunes folder. I have all the music in there now. Now I just need to tell iTunes the location of the new iTunes music folder. I know how to do that, I'm just wondering if the playlists that have been created with the various computers will keep all the songs in them after the music folder move. If not, is there an alternate way I could do the folder move to preserve the playlists on all computers? Also, when I change the location of the music folder within iTunes am I going to have to re-ad the music by hand or will it automatically do it?

A Way to mark videos as watched?? ...
Is there a way to force iTunes to show videos as "watched" so they don't transfer to my Apple TV when I tell it to transfer only unwatched episodes of TV shows and other videos? For some reason videos sometimes don't think they'd been watched even when they have and my Apple TV fills up with already watched episodes.

So, all the video content I've purchased over the years is no longer playable on the display I have connected to my MacBook Pro. And the cable was run through the walls when the house built, so there's no changing the cable even if that were a solution.
According to Apple Support, this is meant to prevent people from pirating content. I am presuming Apple has no issue with us watching on a connected monitor, yet a totally legit in-home use is now no longer permissible. Sadly, my days of purchasing video on iTunes are over. Sadly because it was a great service while it lasted.

Hi all,
We've just set up a home sharing in iTunes (both 9.0, both Safari 4.03) and a strange thing is happening.
We can copy music back and forth between the computers, even play music off the other computer - nice!
When it comes to apps things are somehow more confused.
I have an iPod Touch, my partner - an iPhone.
I can copy her apps with no problem and synch them to the iPod.
If she tries to copy apps from my library, the plus sign appears, her library highlights in iTunes, but upon mouse release a message blinks in itunes (where normally the copy progress bar is) and nothing happens - the apps do not copy.
We tested it with both of our logins (thinking there's a one-way connection) and tried all combinations we could think of - absolutely no luck.
I assume it is possible to copy apps, as they copy to my iPod OK. Is it a limitation of the iPhone?

Not accepting my credit card ...
I created an Apple account in the activation steps when i turn on my new Macbook Pro for the first time. Then, I went in and bought Snow Leopard in the Apple Store. Then at last, I went to sign in with this account in iTunes and were told to "review" my account to use it with iTunes.
Fine. I entered all my credit card information in again, but it insists that the payment method is declined - but that can't be possible! I just bought Snow Leopard with it!
I then tried another credit card, but still doesn't work. I made sure that I entered the information correctly already. What can I do?

iTunes quits and iMac goes to login ...
Since I've updated to Snow Leopard, iTunes quits unexpectedly and my iMac goes to the login screen. I set the energy saver to never go to sleep. I like to use iTunes to play music through my stereo. It plays for about 20 minutes before quitting. I did not have this problem before updating to Snow Leopard.

everything is working fine....iTunes plays songs, but won't play any of my Protected AAC tunes, won't let me authorize, when i just try going to the store, i get this funky assed blue background that says download new update ...WHICH I ALREADY HAVE!!!...and btw, all works fine in Windows...however i DE-AUTHORIZED all my computers....guess what?....Windows still plays my protected music on iTunes

De-authorizing computer ...
Hey everyone!
My dad's computer crashed this week (2003 laptop) so he got to go buy a fancy new MacBook Pro!
However, when he went to go authorize his account for iTunes, iTunes told him that all 5 computers have been authorized. Everyone in my family has a computer that is authorized for his iTunes account (back when the store was brand new and my siblings and I were too young to have a credit card in our name) and now he has no way of playing his music.
He emailed me asking if I could de-authorize my computer to play his music which I'm fine with doing, but it's taking forever going through the 500 songs I've downloaded in the past 6 years and figuring out which were bought under what account.
Is there an easy way in iTunes to search for music in your library based on what account you purchased it under?

Podcasts not showing in Nike ...
I place podcasts in a playlist to use during my Nike recorded runs. However, the playlist does not appear in sync options and when I copy podcasts to another playlist, that one also disappears from the music options for syncing. I've tried every option that I can think of to get the podcasts into a playlist and have them synced with my iPod nano so that I can listen to them with Nike . Any suggestions?

Why is it that I can no longer..... ...
....view movies converted by Handbrake in my iPod?? I keep getting the message below when trying to load the movies into my iPod to use either on a portable viewing device (Memorex iFlip Portable Video System for iPod) or my TV.
And it's not just movies converted from DVDs using Handbrake. This is also what I've been getting for video podcasts:

Podcast playlists now not syncing with ...
I have a few smart playlists set to contain podcasts. (BBC podcasts for example) My playlist in iTunes contains a few podcasts but after finishing syncing the podcast playlists on my iPod are empty. The playlists that contain music sync ok. This function used to work in the previous version.
I'm using an older 80 gig iPod. Is anyone else having this problem?

I want to replace MP3s in my iTunes library with newly encoded 320 KBPS MP3s. I also want to keep each track's play counts and playlist links in tact but with the new higher bit rate MP3s. Is there a simple way to do this? Maybe a 3rd party app or script?

Do iTunes "edits" save to the actual ...
I've put a metric ton of audio files into iTunes, edited their attributes (such as song title, artist, album name, track number, etc), added album artwork and everything else that goes with it. My question is this: are all my edits being saved to the actual MP3 file? For instance, if I back up my music, my Mac dies, and I reload all MP3s and import them back into iTunes... are all my edits going to be retained in the MP3 files? I'd hate to think all my hard work has been for not.

When I sync by attaching my touch to macbook iTunes will not complete the sync without giving me a warning pop up;-
Some of the items in the iTunes library including Apple-Mobileme were not copied to the iPod as they could not be found. Then a list which says- Apple - iPod Touch was not copied to the iPod 'iPod Touch' because it cd not be found. And-
Apple - MobileMe was not copied to the iPod 'iPod touch as it could not be found
Any help please would be much appreciated. I have tried resetting and powering off.

iTunes DJ 'refresh' won't work ...
When I'm in iTunes DJ, it won't refresh when I click the refresh button. Also, if I change the playlist it should pull from, it won't refresh the list of music showing in the iTunes DJ window. It's just plays all music alphabetically by song title. Pretty useless like this. I used to use PartyShuffle and it worked okay, but have never been able to get iTunes DJ to work. Any ideas?

In iTunes one has the option of connecting various speakers using airport. Such speakers can be named. The speakers connected can be viewed at the botton on the right hand side of iTunes.

iTunes 9 skipping songs ...
iTunes 9 is skipping my songs for me. I know for definite that 'Sometimes' by The Stranglers from Rattus Norvegicus consistently skips at 1:05, which was bought from the iTunes Store before I upgraded to iTunes 9. I've tried changing the stop time in the options tab, but it doesn't work. If it starts playing after 1:05 it's fine and the song played fine before I upgraded.

iTunes 9 Smart Playlist 'Live Updating' ...
When syncing smart playlists that have the 'Live Updating' option enabled, the playlist that ends up on the iPhone with OS 3.1 or Touch with 3.1.1 does not match what shows up in iTunes. The temporary workaround is to disable the Live Updating option. That has terrible side effects though. But does anyone know if Apple is considering this a bug, or some kind of 'new feature'?

Consolidate not working, Library stuck, ...
I want to transfer my music from iMac G5 to new MBP and keep Rating, Play Counts, etc. intact.
On iMac G5 it's manually organised, but for future (and moving) I want to upgrade to automatic organisation by iTunes.
Since the HD in iMac G5 is too small for the consolidate operation, I duplicated the whole Disk to a 1TB external and I'm now operating from this Volume.
First (I've seen this problem here): Consolidating was not possible, Error Message: "not enough room" (wrong).
I figured out that this was due to some tracks residing on another external Disk.
Though they were perfectly accessible, the Consolidate function failed. So this is a Bug.
Now that I worked around this (unplugging the other volume and Super Remove Dead Tracks Script was helpful),
the consolidate starts working but then fails after some 10 minutes with the error message:
"Copying files failed. The disk could not be read from or written to."
I'm quite sure the disk is fine and it's something else.
Just that I have no idea what to do now and it's starting to annoy me more and more that I have to spend so much time for this move.
Maybe you have another idea or know what could be the problem with this error messag.
I would greatly appreciate help on this.

Unable to update podcasts in iTunes 9 ...
I updated to iTunes 9 today. I have discovered that if there are no episodes in a podcast, then I can't update the podcast. I have to leave at least one episode in there and then I can right click and select update podcast. If I delete all episodes and right-click, the only two selections are now "Show description" and "delete".
Prior to this, once I deleted all episodes, I could still right click and select update podcast. Is this a real bug and if so, should I downgrade to the last version of iTunes before this update?

TV show episode Icons in iTunes media ...
Hi all
In iTunes, I have a list of episodes that fall under the purchased TV show. On my local hard drive, I open the iTunes media folder and all the episodes are displayed in the window. Each episode is shown as a white icon with the blue musical note and mpeg 4 written below. After 2-3 seconds, each icon changes it's picture to a middle grey color with dark bands at the top and bottom. The written mpeg 4 is no longer visible. I used a third party software to copy the episodes from my iPod to my external drive. The same occurs with these icons on this drive. However, the white/blue musical note icon with written mpeg 4 is retained for each episode when viewed in Adobe Bridge CS4.
Is this grey colored icon normal for all episodes that have been purchased via the iTunes store. Why does it start off as a white background/blue musical note and then changes to another picture. Can anyone check this when opening their iTunes media file on their local and or external drive (as a backup). I want to find out whether the third party software is responsible for changing the picture icon. If so, how can I retain the white/blue musical note with mpeg 4 written on it in the iTunes media folder?

So, my iTunes library says it contains 64GB of music, but the iTunes folder on the hard drive says it contains 72GB of music. Whenever I delete something from the library, I always choose to move it to the trash and NOT keep the files in the folder. Is there an easy way to see what constitutes that 8GB difference? Also, if I did delete something from the library but chose to keep the files in the folder, what's the easiest way to bring it back into the library? Thanks so much!

iTunes permissions problem- need ...
So yesterday I cleaned out a bunch of old crap on my computer (MBP, 10.5.4) and now when I try to play certain tracks on my iTunes, I get the "This computer is not authorized to play so-and-so" window plus "would you like to authorize it?" When I enter my password, a new window comes up that says, ominously, "There was an error storing your authorization information on this computer." and then adds, "The required directory was not found or has a permissions error. Correct this permissions problem and try again, or deauthorize this computer if the permissions cannot be changed."
When I was "spring cleaning", I did delete a couple movies, a music video (from a physical CD), and a bunch of TV episodes. Could that have anything to do with this?

I run 4-6 miles daily with my iphone. When the phone bounces around sometimes I get the landscape display for my song list and have to flip through album covers. iTunes and Front Row - slow/choppy HD ...
I use an older (3YO) MacBook Pro (2.1GHz, 2GB RAM, 500GB 7200RPM HDD) with Snow Leopard (up to date) as a HTPC and get very choppy playback of HD content purchased on iTunes. SD content plays just fine, but after the chopiness begins, it begins to affect all content. I have to reboot to clear it up. This issue is also apparent in iTunes and Quicktime.
Anybody know what's going on?
I don't have a frame of reference if this worked in Leopard or not, as I just started using the HTPC 2 weeks ago, well after Snow Leopard was out.
The MacBook Pro is connected to my TV at 1080p resolution via a DVI-D to HDMI converter and sound is output using optical audio mini to toslink adapter.

I don't have a frame of reference if this worked in Leopard or not, as I just started using the HTPC 2 weeks ago, well after Snow Leopard was out.
The MacBook Pro is connected to my TV at 1080p resolution via a DVI-D to HDMI converter and sound is output using optical audio mini to toslink adapter.

Some songs suddenly have no audio ...
Occasionally iTunes will be fine and then as the next song starts playing, there is no audio although the play time is increasing.
If I hit the previous button then it fixes it.
This seems to have started recently, but not immediately after upgrading to v9.
It happens sporadically enough that it's hard to test though is still quite annoying. I will try deleting my prefs. Has anyone else had this?

iTunes and 9.0.1 on 10.4.1 ...
Has anyone had issues with this combination? I just updated iTunes to the latest 9.0.1 software. When I plugged in my iPod classic I got the pinwheel of death and it crashed my iPod, wiping out the songs, everything.
Have been unable to make this work. When I tried to use my older backup version of iTunes it was too late as the library had been synced to the new version.

VoiceOver for iTunes not only Shuffle ...
I'm a recent owner of an iPod Shuffle and I am thrilled with the VoiceOver capabilities. It is so intuitive that it takes my usage of an mp3 player to a newer level.
Nevertheless, I from time to time listen to music and other content in may computer while I work. And I found myself trying to get the name of the song or skipping to a different Playlist using the built-in buttons in my earphones. Which of course do not work, but I wonder why? if it works on a micro device like the shuffle, why not in the computer. Isn't it logic? I mean, it does help to have the playlists names read aloud while you keep your eyes on your task and just press again the button when you hear the playlist name you want, or for people that is listening to a record which doesn't sound familiar to check for the name of the artist?
Any ideas on when Apple will include VoiceOver Kit as an iTunes feature?

As an often user of the App Store for the iPhone, I find it incredibly difficult (and maybe it's just me) and annoying that I can't sort by the highest rated in sequential order of applications either on the iPhone app or in iTunes..can someone tell me if I'm missing something here? Beware: My account got hacked! ...
I made a $1.99 purchase today via Apple TV. At the same moment my account was charged for a $50.00 gift card that was sent to someone else and immediately redeemed. No help from Apple chat. I was told to contact my credit card company and dispute the charges. This in unfortunate as I had looked to Itunes as the future for my entertainment, but now have serious doubts.
When I asked the Apple rep if they were aware of any security issues with iTunes, Her comment was "I don't think one Hacked account is really a security issue." ???

I'd really appreciate some help!
Well... I've been slaving away trying to get my iTunes content on an external drive as my hard drive is full and cannot be expanded further.
Tried all the advice on this site and CNET for moving the library and have never been able to get iTunes to recognise any songs in my library. After moving the content to a folder on my Time Capsule, I've tried using changing preferences, then aliases, then deleting files on local HD...but nothing shows up when I open iTunes!
Latest attempt was holding the option key when opening and manually redirecting iTunes to recognise the iTunes library on my Time Capsule. It didn't and came up with this error message:

Recently got my MBP back from Apple repair. New logic board and reformatted hard drive. I restored all data from a back-up, but I now find that all of my playlists are empty.
My iTunes library is on an external HD, so all the files are safe, but the playlists contain nothing.
I'm assuming that there must be some way to restore the playlists using Time Machine, but I'd appreciate some guidance from the community before I blunder about blindly.

Transferring itunes ...
I tried transferring itunes library from ibook G4 to imac G5. First, I transferred the itunes folder to external hard drive, then transferred to G5. The folder appears to be on G5, however, I can't open the itune library. I am using itunes 9 on the G5. Also, i tried this same process with iphoto and it was suggested that I open iphoto while holding down the alt key and selecting the iphoto folder. It worked for iphoto. I tried the same thing with itunes and it didn't work. Any suggestions?

I'm sure this has been posted before, but I've yet to see a resolution. I have a Time Capsule and since upgrading to iTunes 8.2 (I think) the time it takes to load and playback some songs can take minutes.
I've read a few things about this (like unknown encoding formats as it plays nice with iTunes encoded files) but nothing seems to be definitive and so far there has been no fix.
Does anyone else have a Time Capsule with their library on it and suffer the same performance issues? I'd say 35% of my library has this problem - even songs I have recently purchased.
Anyone know of any fixes?

This has been happening through several versions of itunes. In iTunes DJ when I change the source dropdown, the songs dont change. When I click refresh the songs dont change. If I change the settings, the songs dont change.
When I change source to a playlist with only radio stations, it will tell me that there are no songs playable by iTunes DJ, Are you sure you want to choose this playlist? Yes, the songs dont change.
Apple support told me to trash iTunes, restart, empty trash, install new version. Didnt solve the problem.

How do you change the default ...
I've been adding my DVD library to iTunes using HandBrake and I want to change the preview pic that iTunes adds to the file by default. I"ve tried opening the info pane and changing the album artwork, but it's already blank. Ideally, I'd like to scan thru the movie to the title frame and and replace the default image with this one but haven't figured out how to do this. Can someone please help? Thanks!

Hi all,
I've ripped all of my CDs in Apple Lossless format. There are a couple CDs that are split track with music on one track and vocals on the other. These CDs would be more enjoyable if I could listen to them in mono instead of stereo. Yes, I convert them to mono AAC or MP3 files but would to keep them in AL format. Is there a way to tell iTunes to play songs in mono even though it was ripped in stereo?

How do I stop Determining Gapless ...
Yet again, another iTunes upgrade has caused the horrible gapless playback scan to occur on my iTunes library. As a result, iTunes is totally unresponsive until this action completes. In my case, it's really slow as I'm accessing my files wirelessly from a network drive. I have to keep canceling the rescan to use iTunes. For the most part it keeps track of where it left off, however some files keep getting rescanned.
Here's what I've observed so far (not that it solves anything)
it appears that rescans are triggered whenever an upgrade rebuilds the library. After going through this once for iTunes 7 upgrade, I remember it occurring again for 8 (and probably a point release in between) and version 9.
The gapless playback mp3 tag doesn't seem to stop the rescan from occurring. I tested this for files that kept getting rescanned. I first set them to No and they still got scanned. Next I set them to Yes and still no luck...

A week ago, under iTunes 7, when I loaded my 2nd Gen. Shuffle with songs downloaded from Amazon.com, they played just fine.
This week, loading another playlist with more songs from Amazon.com using iTunes 8, none of the Amazon.com songs will play.
Anyone know why? Anything you can do to fix this?

Remote Speakers Not Working in Itunes 9 ...
After installing Itunes 9, my Harmon Kardon Soundsticks do not work anymore, tried everything that I can think of. The Airport Express tab shows on the lower right hand corner in Itunes, just no sound from speakers. They work fine before the Itunes 9.

Song Just Quits... ...
To anyone:
Can someone please tell me why only one specific song would quit 50 seconds in to the song and then jump to the next one in line? I checked the "get info/Options" tab and there is no check mark next to the start/stop time. In fact, even when I check the box next to the start at 0:00:00 and finish @ 5:12:30, it still quits at 50 seconds? I have even tried replacing the song with a different uploaded song at it still continues to do it with both of them!!
Could really use some help here!!

I have imported some albums into itunes, but for some reason they come up in itunes as seperate tracks, whereas useually i import an album and all the tracks are under the one cover.
Is there a way i can group these 11 tracks so that they are grouped under 1 cover art?

I recently swapped out my old hard drives in favour of four 10,000 rpm VelociRaptor drives in RAID0, to help with HD video editing and rendering.
Before I did so, I made a complete system backup using Carbon Copy Cloner, and also a Time Machine backup.
Needless to say, the Carbon Copy Cloner backup was somehow corrupted, so I had to resort to do a full system restore using Time Machine.
The system's back up, and has been fine so far except for a few preference file crashes related to Final Cut Pro.
However, one little annoyance I have is, there is about a full second or two of lag between me double-clicking a song to play in iTunes, and it actually playing it.
I didn't have this problem before, and you would have thought that with 4 x 10,000 rpm, latency would be a thing of the past.
When creating the RAID0, I had left the block size at default (32K). Not sure if that would make a difference, but I thought I'd keep it the same value as I had when I backed up my system.
Any thoughts would be appreciated,

Has anyone using iTunes 9 gotten home sharing to work?

When I launched iTunes 9 for the first time the Sharing tab was visible; I clicked it to go through authorization process, then it disappeared (once sharing was turned on). That behavior happens on both machines.

Problems with iTunes after migrating to ...
After migrating all my data from a previous MacBook Pro to the newest one, I am having a recurring problem with iTunes. Each time I open iTunes after having quit, say after having shut down the computer, I have to once again agree to the iTunes user agreement. That is a bit annoying. Furthermore, that means I have to re-establish the connection with my iTunes library when using remote from my iPhone every single time, I have started iTunes again.
Any advice on what to do, so I can accept the user agreement once and connect remote on my iPhone once to my iTunes library?

iTunes 9 Starts Automatically ...
Since installing iTunes 9 the application keeps starting automatically on Start-up. Even if I then close the application, then it starts-up again later, and sometimes even plays a song of its own will.

I generally like to use cover flow and sort by Artist so each album is within the artists range instead of sporadic and sorted by Album.
I have a few soundtracks and wanted to tag them properly so i did with the help of iTunes store and comparing them.
for example, across the universe, i selected part of compilation and changed all the artist's names to the ones that appear on the track, but of course in cover flow mode and with sort by artists it will place them in sporadically through out.
Are there any good ways to sort in cover flow mode?
the only other way i could think of is to name the Artist field the soundtrack name and the album artist to the one that appears on the track...

I like the Genius Mixes feature, except for one little annoying thing. It gives me a "Classical Mix" that includes some music that I don't consider "classical". The album was categorized as "New Age Classical" in the genre field. I changed it to "New Age". I quit iTunes and then reopened it and went to the Genius Mixes and the album is still there.
I assume that the info is stored on my computer somewhere and I need to delete or edit some file. Or is it getting the info from a server at Apple HQ?

I created a second library just to use with my ipod touch. I don't need this library anymore as I have decided to sync my ipod to my main library and control the syncing manually. ( the library is bigger than the ipod).

Where is public radio in iTunes 9? ...
I went to listen to my morning NPR station, but once I clicked on the "public radio" folder in the new iTunes, it vanished. What's up? Did Apple decide to only list commercial stations? Home sharing problems ...
Hi:
I'm having troubles setting up home sharing. I've followed the directions via 'help' menu and watched SCO's for tips on the issue but I can't seem to get it to work.
If I'm sharing iTunes library from computer A to computer B, does computer B need to log into iTunes store under computer A's account? I can stream computer A's library on B, but not copy.
Also, applications don't show up: are these not transferable?

I'm having troubles setting up home sharing. I've followed the directions via 'help' menu and watched SCO's for tips on the issue but I can't seem to get it to work.
If I'm sharing iTunes library from computer A to computer B, does computer B need to log into iTunes store under computer A's account? I can stream computer A's library on B, but not copy.
Also, applications don't show up: are these not transferable?

Hi so I just upgraded to iTunes 9 and all of a sudden I can't sync my iPod. Normally I'd try to restore, but I can't even do that because it goes unresponsive while its verifying it. I thought that maybe upgrading from 2.2.1 to 3.1 on my iPod would help, but it didn't. If there is any way to downgrade to iTunes 8 from iTunes 9 that should fix it. Any other help is appreciated!! iTunes 8.x
Hi, can anyone advise on the following. I've got a few of the more popular visualisers installed for iTunes. When turning these on though the playback of the visualiser is jumping every three seconds and isn't rendering smoothly.
Please let me know any solutions for this, I didn't remember this being an issue with regard to iTunes 7.x just 8.x and 9.x

The application AppleMobileSync quit ...
I can no longer synch iCal with my iPhone. I get the message: The application AppleMobileSync quit unexpectedly.
I have already reset my iPhone. Addresses have synced as have applications but it crashes on Calendar sync. The machine also slows to a crawl while it is trying to do the calendar sync. When unselecting the "Synch iCal Calendars" box, I can synch everything else, so the problem is linked to calendars only.
Would appreciate it if someone can help me figure out where the problem is. Detail on configuration and report below.

with iTunes 9 I only get access to the Top 200 rental movies (in Germany), but there are defenitely more. In the previous version you could page through all the rentable movies. Now only the top 200 or filtered by genres...?

For reasons unknown most of my iTunes music files were transferred to the trash and deleted.
I bought filesalvage and was able to salvage all the files (more than 2,500) but without their original names.
Now, when I open iTunes I have the names of my 2,500 or so songs but when I try and play most of them I get the message that iTunes is unable to locate the original file.
Is there any way I can get my old iTunes library back from here?

Hi,
I love the media keys on my MacBook and Apple wireless keyboard for playing, pausing, changing tracks etc with iTunes, but there are other than can utilize the media keys, like Spotify for instance. However, if I have iTunes closed, when I hit the Play key, iTunes will automatically launch, and will intercept any subsequent presses of just the play/pause button. Is there a way to stop this annoying behavior? I haven't found anything in the Keyboard shortcut system pref.

I have 2 non-administrator accounts and an administrator account on one Mac. (G5 running Tiger). I have tried various ways of sharing songs between all of these accounts. What I am trying to do is have the 3 accounts show the same songs when they open iTunes. I want to be able to add songs to any of the individual accounts, and have it show up in all 3. I do not want to make 3 copies of each song. I can't seem to get this to work. I had this working before I upgraded to itunes 9. Now no matter what I do, can't get it to work. Can someone let me know how I can set this up?

Cant load playlist on new iTunes ...
I just got my 4th iPod (3rd generation) shuffle (due to sweat problem) and have found that i cant load my main playlist because it is too big. Now i know having a playlist that exceeds the size of the shuffle memory means it wont load all the songs, but on my prior shuffles, a selection of those songs on that playlist would be loaded. And when i synced, all exiting songs would be removed and a new selection from the big playlist library would be installed. But now, when i attempt to load songs from my playlist, a pop-up states that the playlist is too big and asks would i like to load a 'selection of songs' - to which i reply 'yes'. Then, however, it deselects my playlist and loads a selection of songs from my entire library ! Why ? I don't want songs from my wifes Mamma Mia CD when i am pounding the pavement.

iTunes radio stops streaming on its own ...
It seems to happen randomly. Usually an iTunes radio station will stream for hours, but sometimes it will simply stop for no apparent reason. When it stops it usually stops repeatedly after playing for only a few minutes. It's not the "rebuffering stream" message; it simply stops as though I pressed the stop button. Pressing play restarts the stream as though nothing had happened.
So is this an ISP issue, or the radio streaming source?

Transferring Itunes Library to new iMac ...
A few years ago when I was transferring my itunes library to my current old computer, I transfered the entire itunes music folder over to the new one via wifi. This seemed to work fine but after replacing my copied itunes folder with the empty one, a lot of the songs were exclamation points and corrupt etc.
I ended up having to just copy all the songs into itunes (individually loading each one by dragging the entire folder over itunes). This rendered all my playlists, play count, starred songs useless.
I just bought a new iMac and want to try this again.
This time I would like to do it 100% securely or in other words not lose anything from my itunes set up. I want it to transfer over completely properly with all play counts, starred songs etc.
Keep in mind my library is just under 200gb.
So what is the best way to transfer these?
Entire iTunes folder to desktop on other computer via ethernet? Then what?

Is There Something Else Like Volume ...
I just upgraded to Snow Leopard, and naturally the new iTunes, and it appears that my Volume Logic, (I know it was discontinued a while ago) no longer works. It's still there, but there's no change in volume or sound quality when I turn it on. This plug-in was rather awesome in boosting the quality of audio, and I want it back - or at least something comparable. Is there anything out there?

I am trying to stream files into iTunes from a WD My Book World. I can see and stream AAC files without any problems. However, WAV files do not show up in my list anywhere, even though I am certain that they are indeed stored on the drive. Thanks in advance for the help!
