iTunes constantly crashes playing CDs ...

I've had serious iTunes problems (v. 9.0.1) ever since upgrading to OS 10.5.6 on my ppc 20" G5 iMac. In the meantime my internal superdrive died and I bought a La Cie ext. superdrive instead. It went back to La Cie support twice because I thought the problems were the drive. I just purchased a replacement Toshiba internal drive and replaced it myself. It works fine, but now iTunes still crashes the same way! It takes two crashes, relaunches, and resetting in order to play a single CD without problems. After a CD finishes, it crashes again. It plays one track at a time off the audio disc image without iTunes. I trashed the iTunes prefs and ran permissions many times. (DVDs play fine. Haven't tried to burn any discs yet.) Also cleaned up the HD directory with DiskWarrior. AppleCare has been no help. What should I try next?
